Goodbye Old Friend

What:  Suitcase

Why:  Ah, my suitcase.  My Whittman-Hart suitcase.  What's Whittman-Hart?  Why, it's one of the first companies I worked for right out of college.  It no longer exists, but during the dot com heydays it was a hell of a place to work.  As a lowly "coordinator" I got stock options.  They had great parties and were constantly giving shit away, like nice luggage!  This trusty bag has been around the world with me.  Many times.  The top outer pocket lost its stitching in the Middle East and had to be removed.  The final straw came this last week in Florida.  A rip has been festering on the top for years that finally came to expose the entire contents of the suitcase.  I did my best to seal it with electrical tape (all there was at my parents' condo) but unpacking damp clothes from the hole this weekend told me it had to go.  So sad.  I love you perfect-size suitcase!

Where:  I didn't have the heart to put it in the actual garbage bin outside.  I left it perched on top, in hopes that a vagrant will use it for years to come.

Back with Beck

Hola amigos.  It's been a long time since I rapped at ya but I've been chillin in God's waiting room.

What:  Another rock poster.  Beck.

Why:  As cool as it is, posters like this just won't find a home on my walls again.

Where:  Either my brother in law will take it or it goes on eBay.

Vacation All I Ever Wanted

What:  A collection of men's t-shirts

Why:  Ellie and I are going to Florida for the week to visit my parents.  Leaving poor Jason at a (quiet, baby free) home.  So here are ten t-shirts to make up for the five days I'll be gone.  10 is a bit of overkill, but you know.

Where:  Donate.  I would like to find a way to send them to Haiti (most are new - Jase is given a lot of t-shirts at work) but that whole UPS-will-send-for-free thing was not true.  I called.  They won't even take packages to Haiti if you don't have a specific address.  I should have time to google a charity that is sending stuff to Haiti while I'm away.  If my dad hogs the computer the whole time they'll just go to Goodwill when we get back.

Pavement

What:  Pavement (and Shutter To Think and Silkworm) Show Poster Signed by Ward Sutton

Why:  I cleared this with my sister first.  She gave me and Jason 3 rock posters back in the mid 90s.  For a long time it was the only art in our house.  But we have since moved on.

Where:  My brother in law is thinking about taking some of them.  If he doesn't they're going on ebay where others are selling for $80.  Cha-ching!

Another apron

What:  Apron.  It says "Cheeky Food Group"

Why:  I don't really get it, and I'm not even sure where this came from

Where:  Up for grabs - but Garage Sale if no one wants it

Ikea Frames

What:  Three Black Ikea Frame Boxes

Why:  My husband is very creative.  He makes these super cool dioramas with obscure Japanese toys.  They're really excellent.  The difficult part is finding the right framed box in which he can create.  These did not work.  Too shallow.  I wonder if he'll want me to keep these.... totally didn't even ask.

Where:  Garage sale fo sho.  Two of them are still in their shrink wrap!

Come on now

What: Velvet Leopard Print Hat

Why: Velvet leopard print hat given as a gift to my daughter. My 7 month old daughter.

Where: Donate to a baby in need of a velvet leopard print hat

Ariel Blanc

What: I know what you're thinking. She CAN'T be getting rid of wine! Stay with me. This particular bottle is 'de-alcoholized.'

Why: When I was pregnant I gave this a go. I was so excited to discover such a thing (at Trader Joe's no less) I bought two bottles at once. It's shit. Non-alcoholic beer is 1000 times better. And anyone who has actually consumed NA beer knows that's a pretty low standard.

Where: Down the sink like the first bottle. Albeit a year or so later.

Art

What: Picasso Print

Why: I bought this for my apartment in NYC. Jason was never a big fan, so it's been carted around the world in storage with a bunch of other posters. 10 years later it's time to go.

Where: I hope to sell it. I'm going to do some research. It's pencil numbered, so maybe it's kinda sorta maybe worth something.

Catching Up Now

What: Nike Bathing Suit

Why: It doesn't fit

Where: This is tricky. Can you donate a bathing suit? It's almost new, hardly ever worn. But then again, that's kind of like donating underwear. Skeevy. I'm really not sure. If I can't donate it I guess I'll throw it out. That's a bummer.

Pretend like it's still Sunday

What: Blue Beach Wrap Thingy With Dangling Beads

Why: I bought this to wear on my honeymoon. And I did. Then never again. We've lived in some serious beachy cities, but it's just not my thang.

Where: I really think my sister would want this. And we're going to Florida next week. I'll call her. If not, garage sale.

50s Apron

What
: Funky 50s reversible apron

Why: I thought I would wear this. It's super cute. But alas. I prefer my aprons to cover the top of me too. Messy.

Where: Laura?

Too many bad jokes came to mind for this title

What: Corkscrew

Why: I'm a professional wine drinker. I use a wine key.

Where: Anyone want it? If not - garage sale city

Spritzer

What: Jurlique Rose Water Spray

Why: My dear friend Vivienne gave me a bunch of beauty products from Jurlique, an amazing Aussie skin car line, for my birthday. I loved them all and used them often. The rose water spray seemed to last forever. Truth time: Viv gave these to me for my 29th birthday. In a few weeks I turn 36. It understand that's a bit too long to hold on to beauty products.

Where: This was actually hard for me to do (there was still at least half left!), but it was with a heavy heart that I threw it in the trash.

Yesterday

Pesky Internets trouble. Back soon!

The Inevitable

What: A blanket with sleeves! Ever hear of such a crazy thing? Think about it, you can wear it inside and still use your arms! How about wearing it to an outdoor sporting event?

Why: Jason got this as a gift from a vendor. We did NOT purchase. Here's my primary gripe: what about your back? The snuggie/slanket/whatever does not keep your back warm at all.

Where: Garage sale. Prediction: Every garage sale for the next 10 years will contain one of these.

Gross Old iPod Cover

What: Gross old iPod Cover

Why: Gross old iPod Cover

Where: Garbage

Monday, February 8, 2010

Oops

I missed my first day yesterday. Wicked hangover. To make up for it, I'm getting rid of two things today. We're back to the clothes for a bit, but hang in there. I filled up a container of crap this weekend and will have more interesting things to post shortly.

What
: Two tank tops, circa 2001 NYC

Why: My figure (and fashion in general) is just slightly different than it was then

Where: Gave to a friend who is the same age now that I was in 2001

Saturday, February 6, 2010

Wine Wine Wine Wine Wine

What: Green Wine Bag that says "wine wine wine wine wine" (in case you were confused as to what to carry in a bag this size)

Why: I'm just not going to use this. I have other wine bag tote things. Which makes me wonder if I'll ever use those either?

Where: Garage sale. Someone might want it for a quarter.

Friday, February 5, 2010

Long sleeve shirt

What: Brown Max Studio Long Sleeve Shirt

Why: Is this getting boring to anyone else? Enough already. Let me get through the weekend and I'll have some more interesting stuff to post.

Where: Gave to a friend

Extra! Hangers

What: Crappy wire hangers

Why: I told you! No wire hangers. Ever!

Where: Now here's the point to this post - did you know that most dry cleaners will take the hangers back? I had no idea! The other day I saw a BIG sign announcing as much at my dry cleaners. A sign I've somehow missed the past two years. So I gathered up a shit ton of hangers and brought them back. Ta-da!

PS - I'm not counting this because normally I'd throw away the old hangers. This is way better.

Another pair of crazy jeans

What: Jeans. Super low rise, boot cut jeans with a weird seam down the front and back. Would you respect me in the morning if I admitted to a star-shaped patch on the back pocket?

Why: See above

Where: Donate

Brown Cardi

What: Brown Emanuel (Ungaro) for Liberte Cardigan

Why: Told you I wore a lot of cardigans. This one I actually bought at Liberty in London during Boxing Day sales. I have never seen such crowds. Oxford Street was wall-to-wall people. Jason made me swear never again. Memories. But the sweater is very worn. And has a hole. And ok, it was Boxing Day 1996.

Where: Donate

Little grey cardigan

What: Grey 3/4 sleeve cardigan

Why: My entire work wardrobe used to consist of dress-pants-and-cardigan outfits. This was one of the last. I just don't wear it any more.

Where: It went to a loving home.

Monday, February 1, 2010

Funky black jacket

What: Cool black jacket

Why: I love it, but I just don't wear it any more. Acquired at my friend Oskar's boutique in LA. If you're ever in Echo Park, do your wardrobe a favor and go to Luxe de Ville.

Where: Gave to a friend who is already wearing it. As it should be.

A note about February

February is all about clothes.

I will be going through our closets and purging. I know that makes for a bit of a dull blog, but it has to be done. At least I chose the shortest month.

This also gives me the time to scour the rest of the house, because the obvious junk has already been listed and there are still 11 months to go.
